Development Associate (Part-Time, 16 hours/week)

REPORTS TO : Development Director

The New York Asian Women’s Center is the largest Asian American focused domestic violence agency in the country; a premier human trafficking victim serving organization; and, a national demonstration project that will develop and provide model services to sexually abused survivors. With a $3.5 million annual budget, NYAWC offers a 24/7 hotline; counseling and case management services for survivors and their children; emergency shelter and transitional housing; and, immigration legal services.

Annually, NYAWC raises over $750,000 from foundations, corporations and individuals. With encouragement and through fundraising by our board of directors our goal is to increase private funding, especially by expanding individual donations. As such, we are hiring a part-time development associate. This position supports the fundraising activities of the board of directors, executive director and development department.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide administrative support to board members, the executive director, and development director in donor prospecting and cultivation efforts.
  • Prepare for, assist with and follow up on meetings with individuals, corporations, and foundations.
  • Keep track of board members’ giving and fundraising activities.
  • Assist with the coordination of special events and campaigns.
  • Process donations and draft acknowledgement letters.
  • Special projects and other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 1-2 years of relevant fundraising experience.
  • Excellent organization and communication skills.
  • Experience using donor database/software.
  • BA required, Asian language preferred.

Residential Advocate

REPORTS TO : Residential Manager

The goal of the NYAWC temporary residential program is to provide a safe environment that will support the recovery of survivors and their children from domestic violence and will aid in their reintegration into the community.

The intent of our residential programs is to be salubrious: all residential program staff works together to promote strong relationships between mother and child and supportive adult-to-adult interactions.  We reinforce positive behavior and healthy attitudes.  We assist residents in gaining essential skills and aim to advance psychological functioning.

The Residential Advocate’s primary responsibilities are: to provide comprehensive empowerment counseling to shelter clients and to assist in any administrative tasks required by management. In addition, the RA will be responsible, under the direction of the Residential Manager or Residential Junior Manager, for a variety of other tasks necessary to the smooth running of our programs and facilities.

Founded in 1982, the New York Asian Women’s Center is the first organization on the East Coast to address the issues of domestic violence in the Asian communities. With the only 24-hour multi-lingual hotline and shelter program for Asian survivors of domestic violence, the Center provides counseling and advocacy to domestic violence survivors, including children who have witnessed domestic violence.

 Primary Responsibilities:

  • This position’s hours are either: Weekdays 3 PM-11PM - OR- two weekday shifts of 9 AM -5PM (Wednesdays plus one other weekday) and Saturdays and Sundays 7AM-7PM. This is a full-time position.
  • Manage a caseload of 3-4 Residential human trafficking and domestic violence clients, providing counseling, case management and accompaniment services for clients’ legal, immigration, entitlement, and housing needs
  • Administrative and operational tasks such as following through on agency and government protocols and related documentation
    • Assist RM with facility administration for agency and government protocol;
    • Facilitate internal/external communications of facility
  • Contribute to supporting the well-being and advancement of the residential children via monitoring CACFP, structured activities, and communicating with children’s counselors and fellow shelter staff
  • Perform maintenance tasks as needed (for example, room preparation and light cleaning)
  • Ensure that the residence is appropriately staffed according to regulations, meaning the staff member cannot leave until her/his replacement arrives and must be on call for extra shifts in case of emergency
  • Other duties as assigned by management

Qualifications/ Skills:

  • Bi-lingual in an Asian language, especially Mandarin or Cantonese, strongly preferred
  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred and/or two years’ equivalent experience in related field
  • Demonstrated interest in DV or other humanitarian work a big plus
  • Ability to work independently, highly motivated, possess multitasking skills
  • Strong computer skills required
  • Vocational, counseling, crisis management exp. a big plus

Legal Department Manager/Staff Attorney

REPORTS TO : Assistant Director of Client Services

As survivors of domestic violence, human trafficking and sexual assault, our clients are particularly vulnerable to the exploitation that befalls many undocumented immigrants in the United States. Combining client-centered and culturally competent lawyering with our holistic approach to client empowerment and advocacy, NYAWC’s clients lives are forever changes by our representation and care. The NYAWC legal department helps offer immigration relief. Since its development in 2011, The Legal Department of the New York Asian Women’s Center has represented over 100 women and children in their applications for legal status in the United States. In the past two years we have won BIA appeals, partnered with pro bono lawyers to argue cases before the second department, and advanced the definition of a survivor of human trafficking before USCIS. We seek an enthusiastic, compassionate, and fiercely dedicated advocate to lead our newest department in its next stage of development.

The legal department is an integral component of our work, ensuring that our clients have an advocate and voice before USCIS and can live free from deportation. The legal department manager and staff attorney does far more than simply handle cases, as they provide for the needs of all our survivors. The NYAWC, founded in 1982, is the nation’s largest support center for Asian and Asian American survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence and human trafficking. We combine a 24 hour hotline, shelter services, case management, and various programming to make sure that clients are not only protected, but empowered to live lives free from abuse.

This position will be a part time (3 days a week) until July 1, 2013 when it will become Full Time.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manage the Legal department
  • Direct representation of survivors in U visa, T visa, VAWA and other immigration applications,
  • Provide comprehensive immigration legal services to center’s clients in removal proceedings and in affirmative immigration applications;
  • Provide Know Your Rights Trainings to Center’s clients on a monthly basis;
  • Collaboration with law enforcement on victim’s cases;
  • Provide information and advice to client and coworkers on immigration-status options;
  • Assist in developing and coordinating Pro Bono legal program; forming and maintaining connections with law firms who take on NYAWC cases pro bono, as well as conducting trainings for such law firms to encourage further cooperation with the agency.
  • Provide ongoing supervision to legal volunteers and interns;
  • Consult with Project Free Manager regarding any issues or concerns regarding Carat Program and collaborate with the Manager on troubleshooting and finding solutions
  • Work with Counselor Advocates on victims’ immigration and other legal cases
  • Special projects and other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Law Degree with admission to State Bar ( New York required) and ability to practice law before immigration courts.
  • Able to speak an Asian language with a preference for Mandarin Chinese;
  • Three or more years of experience providing legal immigration services, particularly in VAWA, U visas, T visas; (willing to accept clinical or internship placements for one year of experience)
  • Experience in immigration and family courts;
  • Experience working with law enforcement;
  • Experience and/or knowledge of non-profit social services and in working in the area of violence against women and/or the Asian community
  • Ability to work independently and handle multiple tasks
  • Ability to handle confidential matters
  • Strong and effective verbal and writing communications and listening skills
  • Excellent organizational skills including ability to effectively complete multiple tasks, priorities, responsibilities and meet deadlines

Day Resident Supporter

REPORTS TO: Residential Manager or Assistant Director of Shelter Operations

The goal of the NYAWC temporary residential program is to provide a safe environment that will support the recovery of survivors and their children from domestic violence and will aid in their reintegration into the community.

The intent of our residential programs is to be salubrious: all residential program staff works together to promote strong relationships between mother and child and supportive adult-to-adult interactions.  We reinforce positive behavior and healthy attitudes.  We assist residents in gaining essential skills and aim to advance psychological functioning.

One of the Day Resident Supporter’s (DRS) primary responsibilities is to provide child care services to children living in shelter. In addition, the DRS will be responsible, under the direction of the Residential Manager or Assistant Director, for a variety of other tasks necessary to the smooth running of our programs and facilities.

With the only 24-hour multi-lingual hotline and shelter program for battered Asian women, the Center provides counseling and advocacy to Asian battered women, children who have witnessed domestic violence, and sexual assault survivors.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • In the absence of, or as a supplement to, the Residential Manager, be responsible for the smooth and efficient running of the residence, including helping residents manage crises, solve problems, and resolve conflicts;
  • Ensure the well being and advancement of the children in the residence
    • Provide direct child care services that are safe and comforting to children, including feeding/changing, supervising, empowering and enriching children
    • Prepare and record meals according to CACFP regulation
    • Coordinate child enrichment programs
    • Work with the Children’s and Women’s Counselors to improve care and functioning of the children
  • Perform in-person assessment of incoming clients
  • Support and strengthen the functioning of women and their children as well as other NYAWC staff
  • Liaise and communicate with outside agents
  • Perform maintenance tasks as needed (for example, room preparation and light cleaning)
  • Ensure that the residence is appropriately staffed according to regulations, meaning the staff member cannot leave until her/his replacement arrives and must be on call for extra shifts in case of emergency

Children's Program Manager

REPORTS TO:Senior Assistant Director of Client Services

New York Asian Women’s Center is dedicated to supporting and empowering children exposed to domestic violence, human trafficking and sexual assault. Often referred to as the “forgotten victims”, we strive to work with children, mothers, and other professionals in order to effect positive change in the children’s recovery. The Children’s Program Manager maintains a critical role in planning, developing, and monitoring the services that meet the needs of these children and youth.

Founded in 1982, the New York Asian Women’s Center (NYAWC) is the first organization on the East Coast to address the issues of domestic violence in the Asian communities. With the only 24-hour multi-lingual hotline and shelter program for Asian survivors of domestic violence, the Center provides counseling and advocacy to domestic violence survivors, including children who have witnessed domestic violence.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Oversees the array of services and programs that are provided by the Children’s Program, including all aspects of the Mentor Program and Digital Art Therapy Program, such as recruitment, training of mentors, monitoring attendance, handling site visits of funders, etc.
  • Supervises, trains, and monitors the Children’s Program staff and interns.
  • Works with Assistant Director of Clinical Services to integrate the Children’s Program services with the rest of client services and to development new programming for children and mothers.
  • Ensure that the requirements and objectives of the children’s program funding are met and that staffing for weekend children’s services is maintained.
  • Maintain a caseload of counseling cases, providing counseling (individual, group, family, and parenting), in-person advocacy and case management.
  • Organize and monitor children’s program files, materials, and office.
  • Prepare case notes, program reports and statistical reports as needed.
  • Duties as assigned by the Executive Director.

Qualifications/Skills:

  • M.S.W. or Masters Degree in related field plus 3 years of counseling experience.
  • Supervisory and program management experience required, L.M.S.W. a plus.
  • Experience working with children and/or women in areas of: violence against women; child abuse; Asian community.
  • Bi-lingual in Mandarin and/or Cantonese (knowledge of both languages a plus) or other Asian language,
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Must be flexible.
  • Shifted work schedule of Sunday – Thursday or Tuesday – Saturday.

Director of Development

This position reports directly to the executive director, is an executive staff member and supports the board of directors’ fundraising activities.

Currently, the NYAWC development department is comprised of a manager and an associate whose position is split between development and communications.

The director of development will be responsible for:

  • Prospecting, cultivating and nurturing relationships with individuals, corporations and large foundations.
  • Directing and supervising the development department
  • Developing and implementing a comprehensive marketing and public relations strategy.
  • Create a fund development plan and a major gift and planned giving program to increase revenues, supporting the strategic direction of the organization.
  • Overseeing special events and campaigns.

The candidate’s qualifications must include:

  • Bachelor’s degree, Master’s preferred.
  • 4-5 years nonprofit fundraising experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to prospect, cultivate and manage individual donations.
  • Proven management and leadership capabilities.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Understanding of issues of violence against women and/or Asian communities.

Counselor Advocate (Mandarin Speaking)

Reports To: Supervisory Counselor Advocate

With the only 24-hour multi-lingual hotline and shelter program for battered Asian women, the NYAWC provides counseling and advocacy to Asian battered women, children who have witnessed domestic violence.

The goal of Client Services is to provide the comprehensive direct services that support the recovery of survivors and their children from domestic violence, sexual assault and human trafficking. The intent is for all staff contributes towards client gaining self-sufficiency.

The Counselor Advocate’s primary responsibilities are to ensure all clients receive prompt and professional services and provide therapeutic support that encourages self- sufficiency and empowerment.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Manage a caseload of human trafficking, sexual assault and domestic violence survivors.
  • Provide assessments, empowerment counseling services, and crisis intervention.
  • Ensure that clients receive advocacy and accompaniment – either directly from the Counselor Advocate or with assistance of a volunteer - to gain remedies and/or benefits in family and criminal court, welfare office and attorney’s offices.
  • Provide legal, immigration, entitlement and housing information and referrals.
  • Maintain proper documentation of case work and organization of case files.
  • Coordinate with co-workers to provide office coverage and answer the hotline.
  • Represent NYAWC in outreach/community education events, particularly to the South Asian community and other Asian neighborhoods in close proximity to the community office.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.

Qualifications:

  • Experience with anti-violence work, the Asian community, criminal justice, client advocacy, and/or human trafficking.
  • Bachelors in Psychology or related field; Masters a plus.
  • Must be Fluent in English and Mandarin
  • Ability to be self-directing and highly motivated.
  • Flexible hours required.

On-Call Resident Supporter

Reports to: Residential Manager or Assistant Director of Shelters

The goal of the NYAWC's Emergency Residential Program is to provide a safe environment that will support the recovery of survivors and their children from domestic violence and will aid in their reintegration into the community.

The intent of our Residential Program is to be salubrious: all residential program staff works together to promote strong relationships between mother and child and supportive adult-to-adult interactions.  We reinforce positive behavior and healthy attitudes.  We assist residents in gaining essential skills and aim to advance psychological functioning.

The On-call Resident Supporter provides coverage at the shelter on an as-needed basis. The On-call RS may agree to stand in for all or some of the permanent staff positions as desired, covering weekday, weeknight, weekday afternoon, weekend days, or weekend nights, or a combination of the above.

If the On-call RS wishes to work on weekdays, one of their primary responsibilities will be to provide child care services to children living in shelter. And all On-call Resident Supporters will be responsible, under the direction of the Residential Manager or Assistant Director, for a variety of other tasks necessary to the smooth running of our programs and facilities.
